Journalist and author Naomi Klein discusses some of the underlying themes of her bestseller "The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism". The book explores how disasters are either created (the Iraq War) or exploited (Katrina) as "shocks" that allow for the privatization of the social and cultural sphere for the massive profit of corporations. This leads to the creation of more crisis and disasters. In short, disasters are administered as "shock therapy" to the social body so that corporations can be given the authority over previously public institutions to generate enormous profit for themselves: think Blackwater and Halliburton.
